The Asturian Vest / Tradition Reimagined

The inspiration for this piece comes from the traditional chaleco asturiano, also known as corpiño or cotilla. In Asturias, this vest was an essential part of women’s attire during the 18th and 19th centuries. Sleeveless and fitted to the body, it served not only as clothing but also as a way of shaping the silhouette. Even today, it remains alive in folklore celebrations and traditional dance groups, carrying forward the cultural memory of the region.

Recently, I had the fortune of inheriting a collection of antique upholstery fabrics. Their quality is extraordinary, yet the pieces are small — just the right size to become the foundation of this new vest. This gave me the opportunity to create something that honors the past while speaking to the present.

Each vest is handmade by Isme, who carefully combines the fabrics into unique designs. No two pieces are ever the same. That singularity makes each vest not just a garment, but a one-of-a-kind story.

Bringing together tradition and contemporary fashion is at the heart of this project. The Asturian Vest embodies that dialogue — a celebration of heritage, craftsmanship, and creativity, reimagined for today.
